SAT or ACT?  How to Choose and Prepare
Students often wonder which college readiness exam--the SAT or the ACT--is best suited to their particular test-taking strengths.  This article by David Huemer of Your College Strategies, LLC gives very specific advice about which test to choose based on a student's strengths and weaknesses.  Mr. Huemer also offers helpful test-taking strategies for both exams, and tips on how to prepare.
When to Submit -- or NOT Submit -- SAT and ACT Scores
Even before COVID-19, many colleges and universities had adopted a "test score optional" admissions policy.  Since the start of the pandemic, however, a large percentage of schools have announced that they are no longer requiring applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores.  Click here to read about the factors you should consider when deciding whether or not to submit your scores.
NCAA Eligibility for College-Bound Athletes
If you are a current junior or senior who plans to participate in Division I or II athletics in college, please talk to your school counselor about having your transcript submitted to the NCAA Eligibility Center.  Transcripts should be submitted at the end of your junior year, and again after high school graduation.  Current seniors who did not submit a transcript to the NCAA at the end of junior year should request a transcript upload as soon as possible.

Instant Decision Day for Seniors - Wednesday, October 8
Instant Decision Day at OLSH is a chance to for our seniors to meet one-on-one with college representatives and receive an admission decision on the spot!  We have invited local colleges to come to OLSH the morning of October 8, while the students in grades 9-11 are taking the SAT.  Seniors will have access to their transcripts, and will be able to meet with college representatives and talk about what each school has to offer.  They will also have the opportunity to complete the application with the school providing a decision in that moment.  Some schools may even have scholarship information available.  Schools planning to attend include Carlow University, Duquesne University, Franciscan University of Steubenville, La Roche University, Ohio Northern University, Penn State Beaver, Robert Morris University, Seton Hill University, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Wheeling University, among others!  Additional activities are being planned for that morning to help prepare them for life after OLSH!
College Admissions Visits at OLSH
Each year, admissions representatives from more than 50 colleges, universities, trade schools and military organizations visit OLSH to speak with interested students.  Juniors and seniors are eligible to attend these college information sessions, with a limit of ten sessions per student, per academic year.

Juniors and seniors who wish to attend one of these sessions should register through Scoir at least one day in advance of the event.  (If you do not know how to register for a college admissions visit through Scoir, please contact your school counselor.)

The names of students who sign up for college admissions visits will be published on the Attendance List each morning.  Teachers always have the option of denying a student permission to attend due a test, review, project, or poor class attendance or performance.

While the majority of college admissions visits occur during the fall semester, some schools do schedule in the spring, so keep checking back for more listings!

JA Inspire® is a free virtual career fair for grades 7-12 designed to provide students with valuable insights into the various career paths and opportunities available to them.  This event will remain open from January 15, 2026 – June 15, 2027, allowing every student to explore exciting industries, engage in fun activities, and watch inspiring webinars as much as they like during the 2025-26 school year.  The virtual career fair is an option for OLSH students who are not able to join the OLSH JA  Activity Period or attend the other JA classes offered this year.  Participation in JA Inspire® can count as a JA scholarship program requirement as long as the student completes the survey for the Career Fair.  To learn more about JA Inspire®, click here.  Students who have questions or are interested in participating should email Renee Price at [email protected].
Future Pilot Seminars for Aspiring Pilots
Future & Active Pilot Advisors (FAPA) Future Pilot Seminars are free, in-person career seminars providing future professional pilots of all ages with objective and independent information about a flying career.  FAPA focuses on career changers, students of all ages (and their parents, teachers and school counselors) and separating military personnel (fixed wing, rotor and non-aviation) interested in learning about pathways to a career as a professional pilot.

Do you want to be a Professional Pilot?
Has a career in the cockpit been on your mind, but you are unsure of how and where to start? FAPA can help!  Register for one of our FREE Future Pilot Seminars and learn about this ever-present, yet seemingly-elusive industry. Lunch will be provided to attendees.

We will discuss the state of the pilot industry, the educational and certificate requirements, choosing the flight school or college right for you, and the various pathways to a rewarding career.  We will also have flight training providers present to discuss the details of their training courses, pathway programs, and partnerships.  FAPA Advisors and professional pilots will be on-hand to answer your questions, as well as talk about the training required and pathways to a pilot career.  The doors will open around 9:30 AM and the first presentation will begin at 10:30 AM. Lunch served around noon.

Here are a few things to know if you are thinking about becoming a pilot:

  • Professional pilots DO NOT need to have perfect and uncorrected vision.
  • The military is NOT the only – or even the preferred – route anymore.
  • Straight As in math and science are NOT required.
  • Aviation is not just a STEM career; pilots come from liberal arts, creative and performing arts backgrounds as well.
  • A 4-year degree is NOT required.

Upcoming FREE FAPA Future Pilot Seminars:
Future Pilot Seminars begins at 2 PM.  Click here for more information or to register.
  • December 13     Fort Lauderdale, FL  (TBA)

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION
The 2026-27 FAFSA to Open on October 1, 2025
If you are the parent of a senior who is planning to pursue post-secondary education at a college, university, trade or technical school, you may apply for federal student aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.  The 2026–27 FAFSA form is in beta for early testing and will be available to everyone by Oct. 1, 2025.  If you'd like to join the beta and submit your FAFSA form early, you can request access here.

BEFORE filling out the FAFSA, the student applying for aid (and at least one parent) each need to create an FSA ID.  The federal government has recently produced a helpful video that will walk you through the process of creating an FSA ID.  It can take up to three days for new FAFSA IDs to be confirmed, so make sure you allow time for that before you plan to fill out the FAFSA.

See the FAFSA Tipsheet attached below for helpful advice and instructions for filling out the 2026-27 FAFSA!

TuitionFit organizes and anonymously displays that data so that students can all compare real-time college prices. They keep your identity absolutely safe while creating a catalog of colleges' actual prices offered to students like you. Registering for Selective Service
Did you know that in order to be eligible for Federal Student Aid, all young men 18-25 years of age must register for Selective Service?  The law says men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. That means men are required to register with Selective Service sometime during the 30 days before their 18th birthday, their 18th birthday, and the following 29 days after their 18th birthday – a 60-day registration period.  Men who do not register with Selective Service within the 60-day window are technically in violation of the law and should register as soon as possible.  Registration is quick and easy.  Just have your Social Security Number ready and fill out this online registration form.  Male students 18 years of age and older who have not registered for Selective Service will be prompted to do so while filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

The United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution in 1962 creating the United States Senate Youth Program, a national initiative to provide a yearly opportunity for talented young people with demonstrated leadership abilities to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes and strengthen their resolve to pursue careers in public service.
The mission of the United States Senate Youth Program is to provide a yearly opportunity for selected students to gain an in-depth view of the Senate and the federal government overall as well as a deeper understanding of the interrelationship of the legislative, judicial and executive branches.  The program provides a foundation of knowledge and encouragement for those considering a future of public service on the local, state or national level.  The impetus was to create a program for high school students that would “increase young Americans’ understanding of the interrelationships of the three branches of government, the caliber and responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials, and the vital importance of democratic decision making not only for America but for people around the world.”
Each year, two students who are juniors or seniors are competitively selected from each state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity, for an intensive week-long educational program held in Washington, DC.  During "Washington Week," the 104 student delegates interact with each other as well as with some of the highest-level officials from each branch of government, including Cabinet members, Ambassadors, military leaders, the Parliamentarian of the Senate, a Justice of the Supreme Court, and traditionally, the President of the United States during a visit to the White House.  The program also includes the Annual Senate Reception where delegates meet their Senators.  In addition, each student receives a one-time $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.

Click here to learn more.  Any junior or senior who is interested in applying for this program should speak to his or her school counselor immediately, as only ONE application per school may be submitted and letters of recommendation from school administrators are required.  The application and all required documents (transcript, letters of recommendation, etc.) must be submitted before midnight on Friday, October 3, 2025.
