Empty Bowls: Raising Awareness about the Issue of Hunger

Each spring, OLSH students come together in the early afternoon for a meager meal of soup, bread, and water. Participants purchase a ticket for the event, hosted by the Empty Bowls activity and the art department. While the atmosphere of the event is upbeat, with friends enjoying each other’s company and student musicians providing entertainment, the purpose of the event is much more serious. Students are reminded that there are many people in our society who do not have enough to eat and the event begins with prayers for those who go hungry and for those who work to end hunger. Over $1,000 was raised at this year’s event, which was held on Friday, April 12. The proceeds support Our Lady’s Pantry, OLSH’s on-campus emergency food bank, which is utilized by people in the local community. Participants selected a hand-made ceramic bowl to take with them as a reminder of all of the empty bowls in the world.
