Honors Physiology/Human Anatomy (20-21)-Period 8 Assignments

Attached is the packet we will be using to guide your progress in the fetal pig dissection this week. 


You will be expected to follow this procedure to make your cuts and open up the cervical, thoracic, and abdominopelvic cavities of the pig. You will then need to identify the organs, including:

This is the packet we are using for today's lab. We will be doing a simulation of blood and blood types, and how each blood type interacts with certain antibodies. If you are online, please follow along with my demonstration.

I will set up the presentation on your presentation date. You are responsible for bringing 12 copies each of the activity sheet and the quiz. You also need to bring in all materials for the activity; if you need anything from me, however, you MUST notify me via email at least 24 hours before your presentation. This will allow me to purchase it, if necessary, and have it out and ready for when class starts.

**UPDATED: Attached you can find the solutions to this matching activity. They are from a few years ago, but aside from a few minor changes to the wording, it is all the same. 

I will choose five random glands to assess, so make sure that you do a good job with all of these!

We are moving on to the Endocrine System!

1) If you know a bit about the endocrine system (glands, hormones, etc.), discuss what you know. Otherwise, research two interesting facts about the endocrine system. Try taking a deeper dive than the first one or two websites that Google gives you! Post both of your facts here. YOU NEED TWO FACTS HERE FOR FULL CREDIT!

2) What is one question that you have about the endocrine system?

3) Read the posts of your classmates, and respond meaningfully to at least five of them. Perhaps comment about their facts or add to them. Maybe try to answer their question if you think you know the answer. It's up to you--participate more than just saying 'Wow!'

Go to the Google Form that is linked below. Follow the directions that are provided in the Google Form. 

Answer all 30 of the multiple-choice. 

Answer 2 of the 3 long-response questions only. For the long-response questions, use full sentences! For the question that you do not answer, write N/A! Failure to do either of these will result in a deduction of points!

For both of the tests below, take notes as you go! This will help you to keep track of the tests and what they mean, as well as your own results. I chose these websites because they do not require any information from you, and you can do them pretty easily. Each test should take less than 10 minutes each. Please keep in mind that these are not equivalent to a real test with a real doctor!

SIGHT: Go to the Essilor Group website below to do some vision tests! You may need someone to help you by controlling the computer and clicking your choices, as you will need to stand about 1 meter away from the screen for some of these tests. If you have a wireless mouse, great!

HEARING: Go to the Starkey website to try the hearing tests. Headphones may be a good idea if there is a lot of ambient noise where you are working.

ASSIGNMENT: Discuss directly in this assignment what you have learned from these two sets of tests, as well as what your results may mean about your two sensory systems. I'm not asking for 10 pages worth of analysis. A couple of paragraphs will be sufficient!

Go to the Google Form that is linked below. Follow the directions that are provided in the Google Form. Answer all 35 of the multiple-choice, and only 3 of the 4 long-response questions. For the question that you do not answer, write N/A--failure to do so will mean a penalty of one point! For the addition of a point instead, write out your favorite riddle--a 'brain-teaser', if you will!

If you are at home, you will need a lab partner to help you out (parent, grandparent, sibling, etc.). You just need a metric ruler and a flashlight. I have provided a printable ruler to use if you do not have access to one at home.

Follow the directions for each of the different reflexes. Write a hypothesis where prompted. Record all of your data and observations in the data tables provided. Observations should be more detailed than 'It moved.' Answer the review questions at the end to wrap up this lab.

Please either read the following article or watch the following video about meditation and how it can affect the brain. Then, answer the following:

What is one way in which mindfulness has been shown to alter structures of the brain? Further, do you practice mindfulness? If yes, what do you do? If no, is there something you will be interested in trying?

Print out the following worksheet, OR complete this in your notebook. If completing in your notebook, please try to be as neat and precise with the graphs as possible!

DO NOT use any resources (notes, book, etc.) to complete the first graph. Try to do your best with what you remember. Once you have that completed, you may use your notes and book to complete the rest of the assignment.

Today we will choose groups, and then each group will select their top 3 muscles that they would like to use in their video. To be fair, I will choose priority randomly between both 3rd and 8th periods using each group's preferences. I will post these results here later today.

Using the link for the Just Dance! video on YouTube, complete the attached assignment by identifying movements that occur in each of the dance moves.

The other part of the assignment involves recording a 10-15 second video of yourself participating in this dance. You can choose any part--just make sure that the music can be heard in the video! Then, indicate whether you would like to enter into the competition to earn bonus points on a future test.
---> If you say YES, I will include your video in a post with all of the other competing videos for you and your classmates to vote on.
---> If you say no, no one else will see your video! But you do still need to submit the video to get full credit in this assignment.

Use the following Google Slides presentation or Chapter 8 in your book to complete the chart. For each muscle, you must indicate the origin and insertion bones, and then describe the action(s) of that muscle. For every action, you must name the movement and the joint where the movement occurs.

Time for everyone's favorite thing! A test! Which must be done by the end of the week! For homework!

Seriously though, this is a pretty laidback assessment, and I have provided it as a way to wrap up our work in Chapter 7 while also giving you an opportunity to improve your grade in the 'Exam' category. This assignment is worth 25 points. Put your work (format it correctly, though!) in the Google Doc included in this assignment.

You will be writing a 250- to 500-word response to one of the prompts listed in the document below. Think of it as a fancy long-response question from a typical exam. I am only asking you to choose one, but make sure that you do a good job! Follow the directions in the document closely, provide all correct information, and you will earn full credit! 25/25! It is as simple as that.

Print out the following packet. I have included blank pages to be able to print out double-sided.

Follow the directions on the front page to color each bone on each page correctly. You will be graded based off of accuracy with your colors. Colored pencils can be provided in school if you still do not have any (what have you been doing??), but you can use whatever coloring tools you may have at home. If you are unable to print the packet, use your computer or phone to edit the picture digitally by adding the appropriate colored marks to each bone.

Color all skull images on the first page, both upper limb images on the second page, and only the central lower limb image on the third page. Ignore the articulations/joints.

Time for some fun! And food!

This is a fun little group project where you will get to use food to model the 5 layers of the epidermis. You are making a trifle! I have provided the directions in the document below.

You and your group will make your trifle and poster for either Wednesday 11/18 or Thursday 11/19. You must be in school for the day that you sign up for. Sign up for your group for the appropriate day in the sign-up document--period 3 is on the first page and period 8 is on the second page.

Watch the video provided below, where I discuss the skin healing processes for cut and burn injuries. As you watch the video, take notes in your notebook. I want WRITTEN notes. To receive credit for this assignment, photograph or scan your notes, and upload them here.

Follow the instructions at the top of the lab packet document. View each image (actual pictures of the microscopic images from our lab!), describe the structure of the tissue that the pointer is touching, and guess the name of the type of tissue you are viewing.

Week 1, Online Day 1

So, either read sections 2.1-2.2 (and the very beginning of 2.3) of Chapter 2 in the book, or check out the Quizlet below containing the vocabulary from Chapter 2 that I would like you to be familiar with in this class. These are chemistry concepts you should already know, so this should be a review.
