Below you will find links to scholarship opportunities available to students. These scholarships are offered by outside organizations not affiliated with OLSH. It is your responsibility to review and complete all application requirements. Be sure to begin the application process well in advance of the posted deadlines.

Scholarship opportunites without specific deadlines, or with multiple deadlines:
The College Board has introduced a new scholarship program which has no income, GPA, or SAT score requirements and rewards high school students for taking the necessary steps to plan for college.  The Opportunity Scholarships are now available to Class of 2021 high school students who take college planning steps such as building a college list, practicing for the SAT, completing the FAFSA and applying to colleges.  Students will earn a chance to win scholarships of $500–$2,000 by completing up to six individual college planning steps. The more steps they complete, the more scholarships they are eligible to win. Students who complete all six college planning steps will be eligible to win a $40,000 scholarship!  To learn more about the Opportunity Scholarship program, click here.
The Gene Kelly Awards Scholarships are awarded each year to participating high school students who represent the vision and integrity of the Gene Kelly Awards as demonstrated through their artistic and academic excellence. Scholarship amounts vary.  High school seniors who participate in the Gene Kelly Awards are eligible for a number of exclusive scholarship opportunities. Neumann University (PA) is offering a $3,000 per year, renewable Catholic High School Grant to any student who meets their admission criteria and enrolls from a Catholic high school.  Students are considered for this award at the time of application to the university and will be notified after their admittance to Neumann University. Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Foundation distributes scholarships and awards totaling more than $500K annually to our students and universities.  Our scholarships support students at every university in the System.  Each scholarship applicant must complete a PASSHE Foundation general application before accessing the desired scholarship.  Please see the flyer posted below for more information.  Each scholarship title is a hyperlink to the application.  Scholarship academic levels will be labeled. Through the generosity of donors, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County manage one of the most robust foundation-led scholarship programs in the country. Each year, they work with donors and committees to oversee more than 325 scholarship funds, awarding approximately $2.8 million in scholarships annually to students throughout the United States.  While some of the available scholarships are tied to specific schools, many are not and are for students from specific geographic areas, specific colleges, intended majors, life experiences, etc.  Scholarships for 2022-23 will open in November.  Students may search for applicable scholarships on the Foundation website, https://pittsburghfoundation.org/scholarships

The Rotary Club of Moon Township has an endowed scholarship with Robert Morris University.  This endowed scholarship is an annual award, renewable for up to 4 years to graduates from Moon Area High School, Cornell High School or Our Lady of Sacred Heart High Schools who have demonstrated a strong sense of Community Service. The value of the scholarship award is a minimum of $1500 annually.  Interested students should complete the application form below and submit it, along with the required attachments, to their school counselors.
Scholarship opportunities with specific deadlines:
Each year NEED awards $5,000 Leadership Scholarships, $1,000 NEED Achiever Scholarships, and other Special Scholarships (amount TBD) to deserving African American graduating high school seniors.  In order to be considered for NEED Scholarships, students must first be nominated by their school counselors.  Recommended students must have a minmum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5, and must also demonstrate leadership and excellence through academic achievement and extra curricular activities, including a committment to community service.  Seniors who wish to be nominated for the NEED Scholarships should speak to their school counselors as soon as possible.  Nominations are due no later than November 8, 2021.  Application packets will be mailed directly to all nominated students.  
Deadlines:  Nominations due by November 8, 2021.  Completed applications due by December 6, 2021.
Current high school seniors:  Sign up for emails to get helpful college tips and resources, and enter for the chance to win a scholarship! Throughout the year, 12 eligible students or parents will be randomly selected to win a $5,000 Discover® Student Loans Scholarship Award to help cover college expenses.  Click here to enter.

Trib Total Media is proud to announce the Scholarship for Diversity in Media. This scholarship is designed to award exceptionally talented Journalism, Communication, or English Writing students who are culturally, ethnically or racially diverse.  Each year, Trib Total Media will select one Western Pennsylvania student to receive up to $30,000 in scholarship funds awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500 each. The recipient also will receive a summer internship at Trib Total Media and, upon graduation, an offer for full-time employment.  Current high school seniors with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 who plan to major in Journalism, English Writing or Communication are eligible to apply.  To learn more, click here.

The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to carrying on the tireless mission of the late Trib Total Media managing editor to inspire the next generation of journalists to pursue their work with the same unfailing passion and integrity that Jim displayed each day.  Each year, Trib Total Media will select one Western Pennsylvania student to receive up to $30,000 in scholarship funds awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500 each. The recipient also will receive a summer internship at Trib Total Media and, upon graduation, an offer for full-time employment.  Current high school seniors with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 who plan to major in Journalism, English Writing or Communication are eligible to apply.  To learn more, click here.

The Bob Williams Memorial Rotary Scholarship Program will award scholarships (up to $5,000 for an academic year) to selected high school seniors who plan to enroll at a post-secondary educational institution for the the 2022-23 school year.  Current high school seniors who have a GPA of 2.5 or greater are eligible to apply.  Application requirements inlcude submission of a high school transcript; two letters of recommendation; lists of extracurricular activities, community service projects, and special awards and recognition; plus a 400-600 word essay.  An application form for this scholarship program is attached below.

The $25,000 Highmark Scolarship in Actuarial Science at Robert Morris University will be awarded to an outstanding actuarial science freshman from an underrepresented group and/or who demonstrates commitment to empowering members of underrepresented groups, combating stereotypes, and enabling others to better understand person of different races, ethnicities or other traits. The award also includes a guaranteed internship and mentorship from Highmark.  For more information or to apply, click here.

Each year Franklin Park Borough awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are borough residents. Typically, ten $1,000 Franklin Park Borough Community Scholarships are awarded. However, the number of scholarships varies based on the amount of funds raised. One scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing post-secondary education at a trade/technical school. This scholarship is named after Melvin D. Lubert, a borough employee who passed away unexpectedly while on duty at the Public Works Department. 
Up to two scholarships may be awarded to qualified Junior Firefighters. The remaining scholarships are awarded based on community service, academic and other criteria.  To learn more or download a scholarship application, please click here.

Recipients of Edinboro University's True Promise Scholarship may receive up to a full in-state tuition for entering freshmen who are PA residents and are Pell eligible.  Students are required to file a FAFSA and be admitted by April 5 to be considered for this funding, which will cover up to full tuition, after all other gift aid has been applied.  The gift aid that will be included is Pell, PA State Grant, SEOG and other University scholarships.  Students must be enrolled and attending classes full-time each semester in order to receive the award.  The award is renewable for 8 consecutive semesters (fall and spring), if the student maintains the following criteria:
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
    • 24 new credits, earned at the conclusion of the Spring semester
    • Continued Pell eligible based on each academic year FAFSA results

The Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund will award $16,000 college scholarships (paid at $4,000 per year for four years) to selected high school seniors of Italian heritage.  A "Matching Funds Scholarship Program" has been established to increase the scholarship amount to the awardees.  The following colleges and universities are participating in the matching funds program:

In order to be considered for these scholarships, students must be of Italian heritage and demonstrate both financial need and excellent academic performance.  A letter and scholarship application are posted below.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, the first Black Sorority of college educated women in the world, is pleased to offer the Toni S. Kendrick Achievement Award in the amount of $1,000.00 to two (2) graduating high school seniors in Allegheny County .  Graduating seniors who have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college, university, or technical school in Western Pennsylvania are eligible to apply.  To learn more, see the application attached below.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will award two $2,000.00 Madelyn Harriston Giddens Scholarships to three graduating high school seniors in Allegheny County based on the eligibility criteria and application requirements as indicated below.
Eligibility Criteria:
  • Graduating senior from a public, charter, private or parochial high school within Allegheny County
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Plan to attend a Historically Black College/University (HBCU), verified by a letter of acceptance from respective college/university of intended enrollment

The Bernie Matthews Opportunity Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2022-23 academic year. This award of $4,000 ($1,000 per academic year for four years) will be made to a local high school senior who will be an incoming freshman for the 2022-23 academic year. The annual $1,000 scholarship is renewable for four years (total value $4,000).  The Bernie Matthews Opportunity Foundation Scholarship seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity or other difficult life circumstances, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.  To qualify for the Bernie Matthews Opportunity Foundation Scholarship, students must submit a completed application no later than APRIL 30, 2022.  To download an application, click here.  You may also contact Bernie Matthews Jr. at 724-853-2298 or [email protected]

High school seniors can enter to win a scholarship of $10,000 through the Dollar Bank Scholarship Contest!  To enter, students must 1) Register online by April 30, 2022 at 5:00 PM ET; 2)  Download and read the four Scholarship Financial News newsletters, answer and submit answers to all questions in each newsletter; 3) Watch the pre-recorded videos via link provided after registration; 4) Develop a personal annual budget and write a 1,500-2,000 word essay on the topic provided; and 5) Submit your budget, essay and Scholarship Newsletter question answers to Dollar Bank by May 22, 2022.  For more information or to register, please click here.  Questions? Current juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for the $1,000 B. Davis Scholarship.  To enter, write an essay of 1,000 words on the following topic:
Describe the three characteristics of leadership you value most.  Discuss why you believe that these traits are so important and how you feel that they are developed in an individual.

M&T Bank is generously funding fifteen (15) $1,000 scholarships ($500 per semester) that will be awarded to students enrolled at the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education universities who demonstrate financial need.  In order to be eligible for these scholarshihps, students must be enrolled as full-time.  Priority will be given to incoming freshmen graduating in the top 25% of their class, and to current State System students who have a GPA of at least 3.0.  Five of the fifteen scholarships are available for Allegheny, Butler, Armstrong, Beaver, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties.  Ten of the fifteen scholarships are available for Cumberland, Dauphin, or Franklin county.  A scholarship flyer is attached below.  To apply, please click here.

Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants are pleased to be able to continue their scholarship program for the 16th year.  Scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to the winners of this essay contest.  The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors, as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post-secondary institution.  To apply for this scholarship you will need to write a 500-1,000 word essay on the following topic:  Describe your educational career and life goals. Explain your plan for achieving these goals.
