Newman Scholars Volunteer with Mooncrest Neighborhood Program

This summer, the OLSH Newman Scholars spent two separate days at Youthtowne, connecting with students from the Mooncrest Neighborhood Program through outdoor activities, shared meals, and meaningful conversation.

“They were all so sweet to each other and treated one another like siblings,” said rising sophomore Esther Frank, reflecting on the day’s impact.

The Mooncrest Neighborhood Program is a fellow Felician sponsored ministry that serves children in kindergarten through grade 5 with free after-school and summer camp experiences, along with a helper program for older students in grades 6 and up. These programs focus on academic support, life skills, and enrichment opportunities — like this special outing with the OLSH students.

“I think they really enjoyed the day, especially fishing, which was a brand-new experience for many of them,” Frank added. “There wasn’t a single face without a smile.”

The St. John Henry Newman Scholarship honors students who exemplify academic excellence and service. Scholars are required to maintain a 4.0 QPA, demonstrate good conduct, complete service hours, and take a minimum of seven AP courses over their four years at OLSH.

These visits to Youthtowne offered a chance for the Newman Scholars to live out the values of leadership, compassion, and community engagement — and left lasting memories for everyone involved.

“It made me think a lot more about how I treated my siblings and friends,” Frank concluded. “I had a lot of fun with them.”
