OLSH Awarded WPIAL Sportsmanship Award

The WPIAL announced that OLSH was one of four schools honored with the WPIAL Sportsmanship Award for the 2022-2023 school year. Armstrong, Elizabeth Forward, and South Fayette were the other winners this year.

In 1997, the PIAA and WPIAL launched the program "Sportsmanship: The Only Missing Piece is You" and began recognizing schools with the purpose of promoting good sportsmanship and rewarding the best demonstrations of good sportsmanship each year.

Nominated schools completed an application and the WPIAL Sportsmanship Steering Committee discussed the nominees, with a maximum of five schools eligible to be selected for the award. The award is sponsored by The Wilson Group and a $5,000 prize is shared among the winning schools.

A letter sent to athletic director, Mike McDonald, highlighted some of the factors that stood out in the application from OLSH. OLSH was commended for our commitment to continuous improvement and willingness to critically and fairly self-assess; our ongoing outreach to uplift other districts in times of need or crisis; our dedication to instilling the values of dignity, respect, and humility in our athletes, regardless of the outcome; and the standards we uphold for our fans as we work to create a respectful and positive environment for all involved.

OLSH will be recognized along with the other three winning schools at the WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit on November 8 at the Sen. John Heinz History Center.

OLSH previously won the award in 1998-1999 and 2006-2007.
