This upcoming week, October 29th – November 1st, is Red Ribbon Week. This nationally recognized week is dedicated to making students and parents aware of the negative impact of drug use. The Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1985 following the murder of a DEA Agent, Enrique Camarena. After his death, communities around his area started wearing a red ribbon to show support for Agent Camarena. This support turned into a national campaign to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by the use of drugs. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
Student Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) is bringing this awareness to the OLSH community through various activities next week. Students will be given Red Ribbons at the beginning of the week and asked to wear them for the remainder of the week. Our themes for Red Ribbon Week will include “Sock it to Drugs” as well as “Huggs, NOT Drugs”. Students will be permitted to wear crazy socks with their school uniforms all week. On Wednesday and Thursday of next week, we will be holding a Red Ribbon Rally during lunch in which students will have an opportunity to take a stand and make a pledge to spread the awareness of the destruction of drugs, as well as agree to not participate in the use of drugs. Students who take the pledge will receive a huggie juice barrel (Huggs, NOT Drugs), as well as become eligible to wear a red shirt with uniform bottoms at the end of the week on Friday. We are inviting all parents/guardians to participate in the week by talking with your children about the dangers of drug abuse. Together we can all work to SOCK IT TO DRUGS!
If you would like more information on the week, you can check out the Red Ribbon Campaign’s website at redribbon.org.
