English 11 Pd 1-2020-2021 School Year Assignments

Please listen to (and read/follow along with the words on the video) our next poem, The Lady of Shalott, at the link below and then complete the attached assignment by Wednesday, April 14 at 11:59 PM.

Please read the poem (provided at the link below) and complete the short assignment attached no later than Monday night at 11:59 PM. I would prefer you get it done during class today as you have the whole period to do it. Late assignments will earn half credit then become permanent zeros on Wed.

We will be watching the movie for this in class. Please note, if you miss a day and look up anything online, the movie has a different ending than the play, which will affect your answers to certain questions - which will make them incorrect and they will be marked as such!

This is due for ALL students, regardless of when you are testing or if you are virtual. If you are in class on Tuesday afternoon or during the day Wednesday, I will give you time to work on this assignment then.

Sonnet Essay - English 11

Directions:
- Double-space and submit via Classroom **MUST BE TYPED**
- Choose one of the sonnets in the packet ONLY (by Shakespeare, Sidney, or Spenser)
- Identify the theme (main message/idea) of the poem
- Find a modern song that has lyrics with the same theme **Must be Catholic high school appropriate content and CLEAN**

Essay:
Paragraph 1:
- 4-5 sentences minimum
- Identify the song, the poem, and introduce the main similarities and differences
- LAST SENTENCE: Thesis describing the main similarities and differences between the song and poem

Paragraph 2:
- 5-7 sentences minimum
- Identify TWO SEPARATE lines from the song and TWO SEPARATE lines from the poem that are similar and explain their similarities and differences (song line and poem line - compared, then another song line and poem line - compared)
- Explain the differences between the song and poem (themes, symbols, etc.)
- Explain the use of at least ONE literary device in the poem and ONE in the song (i.e. symbols, repetition, imagery, simile, metaphor, etc.) Why is this a significant addition? How does it help reinforce the main message of the poem and/or song?

Paragraph 3:
- 4-5 sentences minimum
- Re-state thesis at beginning of paragraph
- Recap the main messages and main similarities and differences
- RELATE TO TODAY: Explain how the ideas discussed in the poem and song relate to today

**LAST PAGE – Copy and paste song lyrics to end of essay. Be sure to list the website they are from in order to receive full credit.
Late essays lose 10 points per day late. Not accepted after 4 calendar days from due date.

You do not need Word on your computer to do this - just make sure you have uploaded that new file to Turnitin.
