Fourth Quarter Reading Assignment: A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken
The love relationship between Van and Davy in A Severe Mercy grows from a love where the intention for union is central and primary to a place where the intention for the good of the other melds with it and brings them to an understanding about love. This understanding is reached for Davy long before it is for Van. It unfortunately takes the severe mercy of Davy’s death for Van to come to grips with it.
Respond to each of the following statements in a one page (each for a total of 3 pages), typed in NTR 12 font reflection or weave your resposes to these questions into a three page paper.
1) The “Shining Barrier” love of Davy and Van shows that Van and Davy were in love with idea of love but really have no idea what true love is.
-make reference to why the “Appeal to Love” is problematic (hint: love can never have a higher value than the lovers themselves).
2) The “night of the seafire” hints at timelessness but Van can only really
understand that night in light of Davy’s death and his Christianity.
2) Davy’s death was a severe mercy for Van. There was no indication that he would accept God’s primacy in their love without it.

Rubric for 1365 Project
You are to create a 3 - 5 minute video that explains how you and your faith have been transformed since you began high school. It doesn't necessarily have to do with what you have learned in religion class, but it can. You may have done a service project, gone on a mission trip or attended a youth group that had an effect on your spirituality. You may have learned something in religion class that changed your mind about an issue. This is about the core value of transformation as it relates to a heart open to Christ and His Church so it is to be a positive story about you. You must cite music and sources for work that in not exclusively yours. Answering the following questions might help: Has my relationship with God and/or the Church changed in the last four years? How? Did something I learned in religion class change the way I look at a moral issue or a matter of faith? How has my faith matured since freshman year and who helped in that maturity? Also if you google 1365 project there are lots of creative ideas online.
Video is due to Mrs. Jarocki on Google Drive March 1, 2021. She will review them for completeness and appropriateness.
20 points will be given for on time submission. Late submissions receive no points.
You will present this video as part of your Senior Seminar interview and we will view them together in class the last few days of school in May.
