Department Highlights

  • From the beginning of their high school career at OLSH, students develop research skills, including the evaluation of online resources, with the leadership of the English Department in collaboration with the OLSH Library.
  • Freshmen apply research and writing skills through the Roots Project, which features an interview with one of the oldest members of each student’s family. Students then continue to apply and develop these skills in a research-based curriculum that reinforces text-to-text connections in American, British, and World literature.
  • The OLSH Writing and Learning Center was established to reinforce writing skills across the curriculum.  In conjunction with the English Department, the Center supports students by providing teacher-led tutoring and writing conferences, as well as conferences with trained peer tutors.
  • The English Department utilizes various online resources to assist students in the writing and revision process, including the monitoring of plagiarism.
  • Seniors complete a comprehensive career path project in conjunction with their Senior Seminar Project.
  • AP English courses prepare students for success on the AP exam:
    AP Language & Comp.: 92% (2020), 77.1% (2021)
    AP Literature & Comp.: 86% (2020), 90% (2021), 100% (2022)
