Career Exploration

The Counseling Center offers several tools for students to use as they begin to explore potential careers and/or fields of study.

Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences

The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) is an opportunity for students in their junior year of high school to explore the sciences in a hands-on, residential summer program, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.

Allegheny Intermediate Unit Career Connections Program

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Career Connections Program offers students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to explore a career in programs that consist of a one-day to four-day learning experiences.  Students meet and work with professionals who share their experience, expertise, and enthusiasm for what they do for a living.  The programs provide a chance for students to make connections with organizations and people who can help them as they pursue their career choices.  A registration fee of $75 is due at time of application.  This fee is refunded if a student is not accepted into their choice of program.  Some programs have an extra fee due at the first session.  Transportation to programs is the responsibility of the student.

Career Speakers

Every other year, the Counseling Department sponsors a Career Day event in which professionals from a wide variety of fields share their expertise, experience and educational advice with our students.  Many of the presenters are OLSH alumni and parents!  If you are willing to serve as a career speaker, be sure to contact one of our school counselors.
