OLSH launches 2019-2020 Course Catalog

The 2019-2020 Course Catalog for OLSH features an assortment of new courses, including several new AP courses. Students begin the course scheduling process this week, reviewing options and meeting with teachers to plan and select the courses in which they will enroll next school year.

There are three new AP course offerings: AP English Literature & Composition, AP Environmental Science, and AP Biology, which join AP Physics, World History, Calculus AB and BC, Computer Science Principles, and Computer Science A for a total of 9 on-campus course offerings. Of course, students who qualify can take a host of online AP courses through Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth as part of OLSH’s AP Advantage Program.

Three additional courses, Advanced Studio Art, Advanced English Language and Composition, and Advanced US Government and Politics have been submitted to College Board for review and upon approval will officially become additional AP courses available to OLSH students.

The math department transitions Honors PreCalculus to the new Pre AP Calculus, in an effort to provide a PreCalculus course designed to specifically prepare students for enrolling in AP Calculus the following year.

New half and quarter credit elective courses include Robotics, Meteorology & Astronomy, History of Pittsburgh, and Dance.

“I’m excited about the variety of new courses available to our students. As part of OLSH’s strategic plan we will continue expand our AP course offerings to provide students the opportunity to challenge themselves academically. I was also pleased to see new offerings that will allow students to challenge themselves creatively, as well, with Advanced Studio Art and Dance,” commented Principal Tim Plocinik.

The course scheduling process will continue through the spring as students make selections and meet with teacher advisors and school counselors to develop a potential schedule that will prepare students for college and career readiness, as well as fulfill their personal interests.
