Teacher - Advisor Program

The purpose of the Teacher-Advisor Program at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School is to give guidance and direction to incoming freshmen and transfer students, and follow their development in social, academic, and spiritual areas through their junior year.

Each individual entering our school should know that someone is there to help them to develop their interests and goals, and encourage them to develop themselves and their talents to their fullest potential.

THE TEACHER-ADVISOR IS A PERSON WHO:

  1. will offer encouragement when the student feels overwhelmed;
  2. will accept the student for who he/she is, and not for what others think he/she should be;
  3. will help the student plan for their academic needs;
  4. will help the student cope with his/her individual levels of anxiety and frustration encountered within the
    educational institution and report these anxieties to the Guidance Counselor;
  5. will identify problems and refer to appropriate individuals within the school setting;
  6. will make arrangements to contact parents, initiate progress reports, help find tutors if necessary, and set-up
    parent conferences.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TEACHER-ADVISOR ARE:

  1. to help students to become aware of the various school programs that may fit their personalities, interest levels, and talents;
  2. to help the students to develop self-awareness in relation to academic environment;
  3. to open or keep open the relations between parents and student, student and teacher, and teacher and parents;
  4. to offer feedback to the Guidance Office, Freshman Class Mentor, and/or Sophomore Class Mentor on the individual’s progress or lack of progress on a regular basis;
  5. to help the students to plan their academic schedules to meet grade level and graduation requirements, and consult with the Guidance Counselor, Freshman Class Mentor, and/or Sophomore Class Mentor on these requirements; if a Teacher-Advisor sees that a student is failing more than 2 classes, the Teacher-Advisor will call a parent-teacher conference with all of their child's teachers and the Mentor (if your child is in 9th or 10th grade);
  6. to refer students to individual tutors, counselor, or appropriate teams within the school environment;
  7. to keep a copy of teacher-advisor counseling sessions and parent/student files.
  8. to set-up parent-teacher conferences.
